Understanding Spiritual Abuse
Spiritual abuse is a profound betrayal of trust that occurs when a leader, person, or organization uses spiritual authority to control, manipulate, or exploit another. At its core, it is the misuse of sacred things—Scripture, divine authority, or religious position—to coerce or silence individuals. Because this type of harm targets a person's core identity and their relationship with God, the wounds it leaves are often deep and uniquely painful. Survivors of spiritual abuse frequently find themselves struggling with a shattered world, where the very community and language that should provide safety have become the tools of their hurt.
Recognizing Spiritual Abuse and Finding a Way Forward
In recent years, the reality of spiritual abuse has become a critical point of discussion within the church. It is a hot topic not because the behavior is new, but because the silence surrounding it is finally being broken. As more survivors come forward and high-profile institutional failures come to light, there is a growing recognition that a culture of silence is a countdown to institutional rot. Addressing these "fruitless deeds of darkness" is no longer seen as an attack on the faith, but as a necessary act of radical openness and protective care for survivors.
For a deeper exploration of how this dynamic functions and how to recognize it, please see the video below. In this presentation, the Director of Pathways Counseling, Dr. Van Dyken, discusses what spiritual abuse specifically is and how it works.
Pathways Counseling has a special focus on healing the wounds of spiritual abuse. We recognize the profound impact of church hurt on the individual. Through our frequent educational videos, we provide survivors with the tools to understand what they have been through and to find a Biblical way forward. We are also dedicated to working alongside the church to confront and eliminate abuse within faith communities, fostering environments of safety, integrity, and genuine restoration. Dr. Van Dyken is available for podcast and media interviews on this subject.
